In 2012, science philanthropist Yuri Milner and his wife Julia joined a growing movement of individuals committed to giving away the majority of their wealth during their lifetimes. The Giving Pledge, founded by Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett in 2010, invites signatories to publicly commit to philanthropy on a massive scale.

What sets Yuri Milner apart from many fellow signatories is his focus. While the Giving Pledge doesn’t dictate how members should direct their generosity, the Milners chose to concentrate almost exclusively on science.

A Commitment to Scientific Causes

The Giving Pledge asks participants to dedicate more than half their wealth to charitable causes. For Yuri Milner, this commitment aligned naturally with a lifelong passion. Born in 1961 and named after cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, Milner spent his early career as a theoretical physicist before transitioning to technology investment through his firm DST Global.

“A lifelong fascination with science, and a conviction that the future of humanity depends on its flourishing, led Yuri and his wife Julia to join the Giving Pledge,” notes the author biography in his book Eureka Manifesto.

That conviction has translated into concrete action. The same year they signed the Pledge, the Milners co-founded the Breakthrough Prize with Sergey Brin, Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg, and Anne Wojcicki. The Prize awards $3 million to researchers in life sciences, fundamental physics, and mathematics, making it the world’s largest scientific award.

Building an Ecosystem

Yuri Milner’s philanthropy extends well beyond a single initiative. In 2015 Milner launched the Breakthrough Initiatives, a suite of space science programs investigating fundamental questions about life in the universe. Breakthrough Listen conducts the most comprehensive search ever for extraterrestrial intelligence. Breakthrough Starshot is developing technology for interstellar travel.

The Breakthrough Junior Challenge encourages teenagers worldwide to create videos explaining complex scientific concepts, with prizes including college scholarships and new science labs for winners’ schools. And Tech For Refugees, founded in 2022, applies technological solutions to humanitarian challenges facing displaced populations.

Together, these initiatives represent a comprehensive approach to scientific philanthropy. They span from celebrating established researchers to nurturing the next generation, from searching the cosmos for signs of intelligence to addressing urgent needs on Earth.

Why Science?

For Yuri Milner, the choice to focus on science reflects a broader philosophy he articulates in his Eureka Manifesto. The book argues that humanity needs a unifying mission, and that exploring and understanding the universe should be that mission.

The Giving Pledge provided a framework for translating that belief into sustained action. More than a decade after signing, Yuri Milner continues to fund initiatives that push the boundaries of human knowledge, one breakthrough at a time.
