The Indian Engineering Exam or the Engineering Service Examination is the most sought after exam conducted by the UPSC board. The IES comprises engineers who work under the Government of India and are designated as the class-1 officer. They work in different segments of the public sector including Railways, Power, Telecommunications, Central Water engineering, Defence service of Engineers, etc. The career progression of these engineers is smooth and involves a good payout. UPSC IES Results

Usually, the UPS IES results are released 35 to 45 days after the examination.  The ESE written examination comprises of both objective and conventional type questions. Similarly, the main exam is descriptive covering 2 papers of 300 marks as per the engineering stream selected by the candidate. Aspirants appearing for the exam should carry good writing skills, excellent presentation, subjective theory, etc.

UPSC IES Selection Process                                                 

The selection process of UPSC IES is through three stages-

  1. Prelims Exam
  2. Main Exam
  3. Personality test

Both the prelims and main exams are in a written format consisting of the General Ability and Engineering Subject. Total marks for the written exam is 1100 which includes- Objective paper and preliminary exam of general studies 200 marks, 300 marks for civil/mechanical and telecommunication subject, 300 marks for conventional paper 3 and 4.

Personality Test

Once the candidates undergo the written exam, the personality test is the next. The personality test carries 200 marks, and there are no qualifying marks in the personality test. During the test, the candidate will be judged on parameters like decision-making skills, problem solving, and leadership.

As a part of the selection process, candidates are required to be ready with the attested copies which include-

  • Certificate of Age
  • Certificate of Educational Qualification
  • Certificate of Reservation
  • Certificate in support of the claim of age/fees

You will also need to present a certificate for proof of hailing from the northeast. This is for the candidates to claim exemption from the compulsory Indian language. Moreover, the candidate will also need to provide this certificate if falling under OBC/SC/ST.

Certificate issued for Disabled while in Defence Service. Candidate needs to upload the same from the Director-General Resettlement, Ministry of Defence stating he/she was disabled earlier.

IES Result merit list

The final merit list of the IES exam is prepared based on the candidates’ performance in main exams and the score earned in the personality test. The final IES result merit list will be out in October 2020 and will have factors determining the merit list-

  • Total number of candidates appeared for the exam
  • Difficulty level
  • Category to which the candidate belongs
