We’ve seen plenty of leaks and rumors about what might be in store for the iPhone 14. This is expected in just a few months if Apple sticks to its usual schedule. In general, it appears that the iPhone 14 release will be exciting – with a few caveats.
Below is a list of the most intriguing ideas we’ve received so far, ranging from game-changing camera technology to significant design changes. Even if some of these features make it into the final phones, the iPhone 14 should more than makeup for its predecessor’s underwhelming debut.
iPhone 14: Design
The notch is one of the most radical – and persistent – iPhone 14 design rumors. The notch has long been regarded as a blemish on the iPhone’s ostensibly all-screen design. Is one of the phone’s most divisive design features. However, if multiple rumors are to be believed. However, it’s possible that this will be limited to the two ‘Pro’ models.
More recent rumors suggest that instead of a single cutout, we’ll get a ‘pill + hole’ design (as illustrated in the fan-made render above). This makes more sense. The notch is required to house all of the Face ID technology. However, the exact dimensions of the cutouts may be revealed. Purportedly leaked CAD files were shared in a Chinese social media post.
They aren’t as small as they appear. And, if the leaked display panels are genuine, they’re very similar in size to the original notch, minus the empty black space. We’ll take a few extra pixels, but the files indicate that this change isn’t as dramatic as we’d hoped.
However, the front camera is expected to receive a significant performance boost. With Apple rebranding it as a new “high-end” camera that could cost up to three times more to produce.
iPhone 14: Tech specs
The iPhone 14 is expected to have a better chip than the iPhone 13. Given that the 13 has the new A15, we’ll take a wild guess and say the 14 will have the A16. According to reports(opens in new tab), this could be Apple’s first 4nm chip, as the A15 is 5nm. Fewer processes reduce the actual footprint of a chip while also improving efficiency, performance, and battery life – in other words, the smaller the nm, the better.
On that note, according to a February report, the iPhone 14 lineup will benefit from a new, less-power-hungry 5G chip, which will improve battery life dramatically. The rumored 6nm 5G chip would be a physically smaller chip with lower power consumption, providing a double benefit in terms of battery life: a smaller chip means more battery space, but the chip itself would consume less power.
In terms of storage, we’ve heard(opens in a new tab) that the iPhone 14 will be the first to feature a 2TB storage capacity (the current highest is 1TB). It’s thought that the extra storage will allow for a higher-resolution camera.
iPhone 14: Camera
In terms of the camera, the iPhone 14 is expected to have a 48MP sensor capable of shooting 8K video, according to rumors. If that’s the case, the rest of the phones in our roundup of the best camera phones should start making room for the iPhone 14. And it appears that we may finally be getting a periscope lens, with zoom capabilities of up to 50x. However, recent reports claim that the periscope lens will not be available until the iPhone 15. So we may have to wait a little longer on that front.
iPhone 14: features
While Apple’s ProMotion technology brought a super-smooth 120Hz refresh rate to the iPhone 13 Pro phones. It’s expected to be extended to the entire iPhone 14 lineup this year. That would mean that a feature that was previously only available on the iPad Pro would now be available to everyone.
Touch ID may also make a comeback, similar to how it did with the iPad Air and iPad mini 6. Face ID isn’t ideal for unlocking the phone while wearing a mask, as many a frustrated iPhone user can attest. Some rumors even claim that the technology will be housed under the display rather than the power button. Though this may only apply to the ‘Pro’ models.
And it appears that Apple is planning a major U(SB)-turn with the iPhone 14. Bringing USB-C(opens in a new tab) to the masses for the first time. For a few years, USB-C has been a mainstay on fans’ wishlists. Allowing for faster charging and much greater accessory flexibility than Lightning.
